The today’s Altenburger Land had been Slavic since the early Middle Ages. Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa safeguarded his gained rule with small castles. Posterstein is one of them.

Razed to the ground

More than 60 manors existed once in Altenburg county. Many of them were torn down after the land reform in East Germany in 1945. Others, still existing manor houses are vacant today and dilapidated. We are documenting their history and their destiny.

Posterstein Castle
– well-fortified in the middle ages, welcoming as a museum

The 800 year old fortress Posterstein in the middle of the Thuringian “Sprottental” houses a regional history museum since 1952. The museum invites to manifold exhibitions – the topics are ranging from the castle’s history to an early 19th century salon (“Musenhof Löbichau”). In the castle’s church you find unique, baroque woodcarvings from the 17th century.

Sunday, Holiday: 10 am – 6 pm
November to February: closes 1 hour earlier
